Hi all, I know I've been bad about posting lately, but it's because there are some exciting changes happening. I am moving my blog to a new place. I hope you will follow me there.

Please stop by and say hello. It would make me happy. :)

paper heart = best movie ever.

Today I saw Paper Heart, Charlyne Yi's documentary about love. Knowing my feelings on the subject, it won't surprise you that Paper Heart is, without a doubt, my favorite movie EVER. It's everything I hoped it would be. Funny, romantic, silly, sweet, and a tad bit awkward. "A quirky comedy," as Michael Cera puts it.

Check out Paper Heart's website too, where you can play an online version of M.A.S.H.! I'm flooded with memories of sleepovers and Girl Talk (the game with the phone).

Paper Heart in theatres Friday, August 7.

assignment: business cards

My most recent assignment in the Adobe Indesign class I'm taking was to create business cards. Students had to make three cards, one with an image of ourselves, one with our initials, and one with a stock photo. I used a photo of my own instead of a stock image. Man, those cupcakes were good! What do you think?

i support community agriculture

I recently joined the Cobble Hill CSA. I wanted fresh produce, and I wanted to become more involved in the community. Today is the first day of the fruit share. I can't wait to see what the farmer brings. So far I've mostly received greens. It's been salad central at my house. One of my favorites is Thai Beef Salad. I replace the beef for canned tuna when I'm in a pinch for time. Tuna is healthier anyway.

Ingredients
  • 8 ounces skirt or flank steak, leftover or raw
  • 6 cups torn salad greens (mixed is nice)
  • 1 cup torn fresh herb leaves (mint, cilantro, Thai basil or a combination)
  • 1/4 cup minced red onion
  • 1 medium cucumber, peeled if skin is tough, cut in half lengthwise, seeded and diced
  • 1 small fresh hot red chili, like Thai, or to taste, minced
  • Juice of 2 limes
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce (nam pla, available at Asian markets) or soy sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar (I use brown sugar)

turtles and deer and snakes, oh my!

I took the dog to Harriman State Park in Rockland County yesterday. She had a great time running, exploring, swimming, and scaring the wildlife. A list of the animals seen below. Now that I have a car, I can easily get outside the city for some much needed time with nature. Camping anyone?
  • Turtle.
  • Rattlesnake, which completely petrified me. I was walking along a wide trail, when I look down and saw that I was about to step on a snake. I immediately started screaming and running the other direction. I didn't take my eyes off the ground the entire rest of the day.
  • Various bugs and butterflies.
  • Deer, which Maddie successfully scared away. We saw 3 of them while hiking through the woods.
  • Wild turkey! Which we would not have seen without the pup. She was running through some thick brush when she must have gotten too close to the hiding bird. Startled, it flew away right over our heads.
  • Chipmunk.

i <3 ATL

As much as I love New York, I can't help but miss Atlanta. I had a great time visiting last week. There seems to be a ton of very cool changes and additions to the city. I suppose 2 1/2 years will do that to a city. Here's a list of the places I went while there, including a visit to Agnes Scott. P.S. The chapel is a nice chapel--not a dog house at all.

More photos at the bottom.

  • The Flying Biscuit - A favorite from college.
  • Metro Fresh - A yummy, quick, and easy lunch spot in Midtown.
  • Taqueria del Sol - Grab a margarita at the bar to sip on while waiting on line.
  • Whole Foods Ponce - Used to have awesome wine & cheese tasting classes. Not sure if they still do.
  • Cameli's - My favorite pizza in the ATL. Fellini's has got nothing on Cameli's (now with a full bar!).
  • Gladys Knight's Chicken & Waffles - AMAZING all around. I have to go back again.
  • Leon's - A great addition to Decatur Square. Eat the bacon. As an aside, I hear the neighbor's are complaining about noise from the Bocce court. Get with the program, boys. Bocce goes inside.
  • Zyka - My favorite Indian anywhere (besides India).
  • Holeman & Finch - Another eatery that made me think of Brooklyn. Good drinks. Good food. Good times.
  • Ria's Bluebird - Whatever you do, do NOT stand inside the restaurant until you are seated. The tough and tatted waitresses there will make you cry.
  • The Georgia Aquarium - Go early before the kids get there.

one lovely blog award

Thank you to the super (duper) Atlanta ladies over at AsianCajuns.com for giving me this award. I had a ton of fun hanging out! When I got home on Monday, I realized we didn't take any photos, and I had my camera with me the entire time. Next time for sure.

brooklyn-by-bike scavenger hunt

I recently participated in Transportation Alternatives' (Brooklyn chapter, of course) Brooklyn-by-Bike Scavenger Hunt. Teams of four raced around Brooklyn, figuring out clues and hunting for items. All the teams had a blast. I was so convinced we were going to win with 133 points. Too bad the runners-up had more than 150 points. Oh well.

summer is here

Summer has finally arrived in New York City. After a quick stop at Voos Furniture's fancy gallery show last night (complete with tons of toy dogs and Williamsburg children running around), I had dinner in the garden at Spuyten Duyvil. By dinner I of course mean cured meats, pate, cheese, and pickles from Rick's Picks. I sat outside enjoying the warm night for the first time since last summer, and no jackets needed on the bike ride home.

i don't live on a farm, but i sure do like farm tables

I am in love with farm tables. A piece of furniture that has some kind of history. A giant workspace. A nice gathering area for friends and family to sit around. One day when I'm out of my little one bedroom. One day when I can afford a $1000 table.

These are my favorite so far. The Lorimer Workshop, save some wood for me! I'll get back to you with my order in a couple of years.
